Saying Yes + Taking The Leap
I’ve always aspired to be an entrepreneur. But I didn’t really tell anyone that. It’s a funny thing to tell people you want to be when you grow up, because they’ll always ask what you want to build, what idea you have, and I didn’t have one yet. And even if you have an elevator pitch down, not everyone will respond with unwavering support. They’re right, in a sense, to be skeptical. It takes a lot of guts, a lot of commitment, and an unshakeable mindset to build a business. For me, it feels like the only way forward.
Back in October I left my position at a boutique branding agency—a move out of left field for a global pandemic. I knew in the deepest part of my soul that it was the right decision. After toying with various plans for the future, most of which included gaining a few years more experience and then pursuing my dream of working for myself, I realized that I had to take a bet on myself—now—if I was going to live a life of freedom and fulfillment.
I have approximately 6 months until I want to move in with my best friend in a city. So I’m taking this time to give this a go.
I landed in Glasgow, where I’ll be for I’m not sure how long, just two days ago. Now that I’m somewhat settled, it’s time to take the leap of faith into this journey of building my freelance branding(?) business. I add a question mark since the word “branding” relates to my background and many aspects of what I want to help clients with, but it doesn’t quite suffice.
What I want is to help other aspiring entrepreneurs have the self confidence, tools, and inspiration to reach for their dreams—toward that idea that nags at their heart, but which feels impossible, irresponsible, or even insane, given the way our society and economy is structured.
I want to be a part of the movement of small business owners creating an alternative economy, paving the way for a future of mutual aid and support.
The way I can do this is through my creativity and ability to generate ideas and think through plans and outlines strategically. The development of these services and finding the right words will come later.
Maybe some of you are in the same boat as me, nervous to push off into the open sea. I’d love to hear from you if you’re at any stage of building a business, so that we can support each other and share what we learn along the way.
